The BBC and local journalism

Can the BBC save local reporting? It thinks it can and its offer is likely to be welcomed by government and commercial news providers. I think the corporation is being selfish. The Independent gave me a chance to explain why .

A few times last week I heard 1 or 2 of the reporters say "The BBC are letting us use this story" I was just left thinking, "Oh, isn't that nice of them"

Are you sure it wasn't the other way round, Rob?

The BBC and others routinely plunder our newspapers for stories they then pass off as their own. This galling practice is, I'm afraid, just the way of the world.

The BBC is a particularly well-known offender with form in this area. They often have the cheek to ring up newsdesks and ask for telephone numbers/contact details. You can imagine how that goes down...
