Cue: Last night the lights at Fort Amherst were finally switched on after a wait of 30 years. Yesterday was also Trafalgar Day, marking Horatio Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar. Fort Amherst is Europe’s largest surviving Napoleonic fortress. The Fort is going to be linked to the Great Lines Heritage Park by a path as part of Chatham’s bid for World Heritage Trust status. A lot of work needs to be done on the Fort so the paths can be built however. The work at Fort Amherst is mainly done by volunteers. Clare Freeman spent this weekend at the Fort helping volunteers restore the Fort.

In words: (interview with children) “what’s your name and how old are you?”
