Rupert Hamer, defence correspondent of the Sunday Mirror, has been killed in an explosion in Afghanistan. He was one of two Mirror journalists embedded with the US Marines. The vehicle in which he was travelling hit an improvised explosive device near Nawa, in Helmand province. His colleague, photographer Philip Coburn survived the blast but is in a serious condition. Two soldiers, one Afghan and one American, were also killed. These are the risks journalists take when they work to provide eyewitness reports from conflict zones. Every journalist's thoughts and prayers should be with the relatives of those who have been killed or injured.
