Who’s Who at this years Brit Awards

Last years Brit Awards came just before the UK Coronavirus lockdown and saw Billie Eilish, Lewis Capaldi and newcomer Dave scoop up the big 3 awards: International Solo Artist, Breakthrough Artist and Album of the Year respectively. But this years Brits see a change to accommodate the new measures as a result of the pandemic.

For the first time in over 20 years the Brits aren’t being held in their usual February time frame due to social distancing requirements. The awards are going to act as a ‘test event’ on behalf of the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The Brits ‘test event’ follows from last weeks DCMS events in Liverpool in which partygoers were invited to party the night away and find out whether the return of nightclubs can happen safely.

The big show will take place at the 02 arena with Jack Whitehall taking up the mantle as host for the fourth consecutive year after his previous years were a hit with fans who called him “the best host in years”.

The nominees for this years awards have been given lighter rules for eligibility as for the first time ever, nominees haven’t needed an album to be eligible for an award.

Speaking of awards, the favourite to win this years Mastercard Album of the Year is ‘Future Nostalgia’ from Dua Lipa. The album hit the stands last year and quickly advanced to number 2 on the UK album charts and number 4 on the US Billboard 200.

Dua received critical acclaim for the album which scored 88 out of 100 on Metacritic. Dua has had a great year so far, winning the Pop Vocal Album award at this years Grammy awards, as well as winning the Best International Album at the LOS40 Music Awards in 2020.

The competition for International Female Solo Artist of the Year is fierce this year as last years winner Billie Eilish goes head to head with the likes of Ariana Grande, Cardi B, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift. Each of the women have had a great year with some of the biggest singles on the charts including Midnight Sky, 34+35, WAP and Willow. Fans have been spoiled for choice by these leading ladies.

Billie recently rocked headlines with that incredible photoshoot at Vogue as she channelled female empowerment to all of her fans, shutting down haters and proving that she is the ultimate Boss Bitch.

The guys also have some tough competition as Bruce Springsteen leads the nominees as he’s nominated for International Male Solo Artist of the Year for the 10th time since the awards began in 1977. Springsteen is up against Donald Glover’s Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, Burna Boy and The Weeknd.

BTS fans took the group to the top of the charts this year as they’re nominated for International Group of the Year. The Korean Kings claimed over 7 million streams on day one of the launch of their hit single Dynamite, which took the number 1 spot on the US Billboard 100.

The Brits will take place at 8pm on Tuesday 11th May 2021 with Maya Jama and Clara Amfo taking us backstage to meet some of the nominees and performers. Clara has hosted the past 4 years red carpet shows, while Maya hosted a Facebook stream Live from the red carpet in 2017.
