Last night I chaired a debate at the Frontline Club on the future of regional journalism, with panellists Roy Greenslade (The Guardian), Keith Sutton (former editor of the Carlisle News & Star, Jon Slattery (former deputy editor of Press Gazette and William Yarker (media director of Deloitte). Some interesting ideas were floated, including Greenslade’s suggestion of a public service fund for regional journalism enterprise, and Yarker’s fascinating ‘franchise’ model in which major publishing groups offer local entrepreneurs the opportunity to run journalism operations in local towns with centralised back office support. It’s all here in this recorded video from the event – but be warned it rather overran thanks to some very lively discussion from the audience.
(Note: It takes about half a minute for the video to actually start playing.)
