Living up to expectations

Almost three years ago I started talking to a camera. It felt uncomfortable and a bit weird, sitting in a spare room with the curtains closed, using a floor lamp for lighting. Explaining the merits of a few well-known jazz records to an audience that didn’t exist. Just me and my camera.   Fast forward […]

JK Rowling’s Daily Prophet edges a step closer to reality with the wizard news that an issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine will next month include a video advert inside its pages. Graduation pictures on Facebook

A selection of pictures from our recent graduation ceremony (thanks to Gerardo) are now available on the CfJ’s all-new Facebook page. It’s still a work in progress, but it would be helpful if all you Facebookers out there could ‘like’ the page. I need 25 ‘likes’ for the page to be able to give the […]

Radio is dead (Local Edition)

My first blog post when I started at the Centre for Journalism was titled ‘Radio is dead‘. Something that I’d heard numerous times, yet something that I just will not accept. During my introduction to that blog post in January last year, I explained how radio content is actually gaining more demand than ever before, […]

Visit of Simon Hughes

Simon Hughes MP, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats and Coalition Advocate for Access to Higher Education, visited the Centre for Journalism on Friday 20 May. Mr Hughes arrived late but stayed long enough to promote his views on the future of higher education. Journalism students took detailed notes and recorded his comments on film. We all learned how good senior politicians are at […]

‘Hackney Heroine’ talk (October 2)

‘Hackney Heroine’ Pauline Pearce, who rose to tabloid fame during the London Riots after a video of her telling off rioters went viral, is giving a talk about her experiences on the Canterbury campus on Tuesday evening. It’s at 6pm in Darwin LT3, and is jointly hosted by the Ethnic Minorities campaign and the UKC Liberal […]

Dictator or clown?

The picture of Libyan dictator Colonel Muammar Gaddafi on the front page of tbhis morning’s Guardian kept me smiling for several minutes. Gaddafi is a sinister fellow, but he has a Ceausescuesque capacity to make himself look ridiculous. Still, I suppose a man is entitled to dress up in silly clothes after a hard day’s dictating.

Modern day Domesday book

Being an Anthony Gormley fan, a snow-capped photograph of his “Angel of the North” sculpture averted my recently opened eyes and I hastily looked down to the text below it. A website is trying to obtain a photograph for every square mile of the British Isles. The site recently received its millionth submission, with over 1000 a […]

Crazy Rich Asians and the importance of representation

So over the summer, I dabbled a little into the world of blogging. Mainly to build up a portfolio of my work but as I started working on it I found that I was actually loving what I was doing and working on. One particular blog post that I’m particularly proud of is my piece […]

What future for local papers?

It’s been a pretty grim day for publishers of local + regional newspapers with yet more announcements of some quite savage cuts in the industry and the unwelcome news of an independent publisher going into administration. The Kent Messenger Group is not immune and we are in the midst of a proposal to lose some […]
