Youtube Black: Black Influencers on the Come Up

As a university student, you try to find a creative outlet while away from home to cope with the day to day stress and anxiety.  This year, we observed that one of the platforms is YouTube. We sometimes forget that big YouTubers like Jackie Aina, Raven Elyse, or Nyma Tang started off small.    YouTube […]

Perfect Symmetry a perfect package?

Once in a blue moon, there comes an album which removes all doubt of its potential inadequacy and delights those who listen to it. Sadly, Keane haven’t quite managed to fulfill their potential. Tim Rice-Oxley may have cleaned up his act along with the rest of the “piano rock” (which is what exactly, apart from a very […]

Fraudgate: Luckhurst speaks out

At the Association for Journalism Education conference last week, Tim Luckhurst spoke about something we have discussed many times at the Centre for Journalism: the number of journalism degrees on offer in this country that offer their students little or no chance of getting a job within the industry. There is, he told the conference, […]

Drink with your picnic? Only if its a coke

Going for a picinic this summer? Looking forward to cracking open an ice cold beer or pouring a glass of wine while lazing around in the sun? Don’t you dare! An article by Rosemary Bennet and Richard Ford in today’s Times talks about the growing popularity within local councils to set up these very helpful […]

Liberty, Equality, Bankruptcy

Two contrasting stories from France this morning draw attention to the state of flux in our industry and its still robust ability to challenge official orthodoxy.  On the depressing side President Nicholas Sarkozy launches crisis negotations today about the future of the French newspaper industry. Amid plummeting turnover at titles including Le Monde, Liberation and Figaro, the President says […]

“Yes we can”

Today, the world celebrates the first mixed race president of the United States of America. However, despite his rhetoric, awe-inspiring speechmaking and total embodiment of the American Dream, can he deliver? Obama is expected to deliver accross the board, in the economy, in foreign policy and with social reform when it comes to race. First and foremost, […]

Reports last week show the Trump’s suspension from Facebook has been extended for at least the next 6 months.  Having already been banned from Twitter and YouTube, many will be rejoicing to know that they do not have to hear about his goings on. From “Covfefe” to the endless ranting about the “Fake News Media” […]

Work experience: a waste of time?

I was going to place this as our “Pick of the Day” and then I realised it was reserved for “good journalism” so I’m putting it here instead… Today G2 and Comment is free published the ramblings of Tom Meltzer. It links nicely to all of us who are about to embark on our work […]

Looking into my future

For multimedia journalism class the last assignment for term is related to online journalism, to create a way to showcase an interesting or relateable story through an online structure. We need to contact someone and ask to tell their story, they cannot be family or other classmates. So, who do I know that’s interesting? Matthew […]

Module notes for Convergent Journalism 2

A diligent second year (Ali ‘sharp eye’ Houghton) has just pointed out that some of the module notes for convergent journalism 2, covering the online journalism section, were not showing up for second year students. I’ve now corrected this – there are notes covering online news design, and social media and journalism. A good idea […]

New Students Take Note

New students please check your emails regularly throughout the day.  Staff members will be regularly emailing you with information throughout the term. It has come to my notice that emails have gone out to students and have not been acknowledged.

Mind Blowing Fact of the Day

There are fewer than 100 Al Qaeda insurgents in Afghanistan, with “no ability to launch attacks on either us or our allies”, according to Obama’s national security advisor. This was brought to my attention by a column in the NYT by Frank Rich.

The financial crisis hits the Centre for Journalism

The financial crisis has undoubtedly been at the forefront of everyone’s mind recently but it has finally reached fever pitch. We’ve looked at it nationally; city workers waving tenners instead of fifties at the G20 protesters, and we’ve looked locally; spending hours dwelling on the fate of Gillingham and Chatham highstreets in this devastating time. But […]
