Labour yesterday revealed their new election campaign poster, depicting David Cameron as the admittedly cool TV cop character Gene Hunt. In an election that seems like it’s going to be decided by who has the most unique and original campaign poster, I personally think Labour have scored a massive own goal with this one. Why?
Firstly, DCI Gene Hunt is cool. Anyone who drives an Audi Quattro is going to be a damn site more popular Prime Minister than Gordon Brown. Even David Cameron was said to be flattered being compared to the Ashes to Ashes character.
Also, isn’t Hunt meant to be a working-class anti-hero i.e. everything Cameron isn’t? You’d have thought Labour would have played upon Cameron’s background until the cows came home. Yet here we have Cameron shown as a working class hero rounding up the ‘crims’ and sorting out the mess effectively.
And finally, I know Labour want to draw attention to the dire economic times of the ’80’s, but for young and generally ignorant people, all they’re going to see from this poster is Cameron as someone who sorts stuff out quickly and effectively. And forgive me if I’m wrong, but weren’t the ’80’s the time when Labour had some of their worst election performances? Surely they don’t want to remind everyone of those times too?
