Drink with your picnic? Only if its a coke

Going for a picinic this summer? Looking forward to cracking open an ice cold beer or pouring a glass of wine while lazing around in the sun?

Don’t you dare!

An article by Rosemary Bennet and Richard Ford in today’s Times talks about the growing popularity within local councils to set up these very helpful alcohol control zones or designated public place orders.

“These powers are not intended to disrupt peaceful activities, for example families having a picnic in a park or on the beach with a glass of wine. While police oficers have the discretion to require an individual to refrain from drinking regardless of behaviour, our advice is that it is not appropriate to challenge an individual consuming alcohol where that individual is not causing a problem.

NOT intended. I am all for stopping troublemakers drinking in public, if not altogether but perhaps we should introduce a test that measures commonsense when recruiting our eager beaver PCSOs.

The good news is, you can still look at alcohol without the risk of being confronted by the authorities.

Just in case you crazy youngsters get any ideas next year and end up getting in trouble with the law, here is a list of ACZ’s in Medway.

Have a lovely summer!
