All students are welcome to come to hear Eliot Higgins in the undergraduate newsroom on Tuesday, 5 November at 1pm.
Do please put this date in your diary.
Eliot is better known as the blogger Brown Moses. He is totally untrained as a journalist. But has made himself into a person that is useful to news organisations by monitoring hundreds of Youtube channels set up by protaganists in the Syrian conflict.
Eliot works out of his home in Leicester, and started off blogging from his personal Facebook page. His reporting complements traditional methods. A few months ago, Eliot traced, with the New York Times, how Saudia Arabia has been buying weapons in Croatia and smuggling them to rebel groups. Eliot has also done valuable work documenting the munitions used to deliver the gas in attacks in the Damascus suburb of Ghouta in August. His immaculately-researched work has been picked up by Human Rights Watch and media outlets all over the world.
Do come and talk to him. Eliot is on top of a very interesting story.
