Like an England comeback, Jay Akbar has taken top spot from Jack Reed at the end of Matchday 2 in the Centre for Journalism’s Euro 2012 fantasy league.
Jay’s bold choice of Olof Mellberg, who scored 10 points in defence and his decision to make Robin Van Persie his captain for Matchday 2 looks to have made the difference between second-place Ian Reeves – who is two points behind – and third-placed Jack – who is three points behind.
Ian, who cemented himself as the dark horse of the group on Matchday 1, made an excellent tactical decision in choosing Iker Casillas as his captain for the guaranteed clean sheet against Ireland. Also, Andrea Pirlo – another trailblazer for his experienced approach – scored eight points after a stunning free-kick against Croatia.
As for our previous leader Jack, gambling on Fernando Torres paid off as he bagged 10 points after smashing two past Ireland – although he will be disappointed with his inclusions of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ibrahim Afellay and Robert Lewandowski who scored one point each.
And, like Euro 2012 itself, the CforJ fantasy league is shaping up nicely with just 18 points separating first and 11th.
A special mention is in order for Matt Charles who scored a total of 61 points across the last four days – the highest on Matchday 2.
A not so special mention goes to Tom Ruzyllo who is now sitting bottom of the table with 53 points.
