We would very much like to invite you to this year’s Orwell Prize launch debate, which will take place at the Frontline Club, London W2 1QJ on Thursday 21st October 2010. Join us for a discussion on ‘poverty and the spending review’, with three experts putting the previous day’s announcement into context. (We’ll be making poverty a focus of our activity this year, with the 75th anniversary of Orwell’s journey to Wigan Pier coming up in January 2011.)
The programme for the evening is:
6.30pm | Drinks
7pm | Launch of the Orwell Prize 2011 – announcement of judges, opening of submissions and special announcements
Jean Seaton, Director of the Prize
7.10pm | Debate: Poverty and the Spending Review
Chris Giles, economics editor of the Financial Times
Lisa Harker, former director of ippr
Kimberley Trewhitt, researcher at Reform
David Walker, author of The Verdict: Did Labour Change Britain? and Unjust Rewards (both with Polly Toynbee)
Entry is free, but spaces are limited, so RSVP (to this email address) is essential. Please feel free to pass the invitation on to friends, colleagues, students, readers etc. If you’re unable to attend, video will be available on our YouTube channel, youtube.com/theorwellprize, after the event.
Entries for the Orwell Prize 2011 will open on the night, and remain open until 19th January 2011 for all work first published in 2010. Entry forms and rules will be available on our website for the Book Prize, Journalism Prize and Blog Prize.
